IPL pigmentation treatments are designed to specifically target excess melanin — breaking down sun damage, dark spots and uneven pigmentation at the source.
How it works:
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
- Pigmentation treatments use targeted light energy to break down excess melanin within the skin — the pigment responsible for sun spots, uneven tone and discolouration.
The light is absorbed by areas of concentrated pigment and converted into heat, which fragments the melanin into smaller particles. These are then naturally brought to the surface and shed, or cleared by the body over time.
Unlike surface-level treatments, IPL works deeper within the skin to target pigmentation at its source, helping to visibly reduce discolouration while preventing it from reappearing as quickly.
Results are progressive, with pigmentation gradually lifting and skin tone becoming clearer, brighter and more uniform over a series of treatments.
What it feels like:
Most clients describe it as a warm flick — like a quick snap of a rubber band followed by gentle warmth. Areas with more concentrated pigment may feel slightly more sensitive, as these absorb more of the light energy, but the treatment is very fast and generally well tolerated. Treatments are quick, and we’ll always use cooling techniques and protective gels to keep you comfortable throughout.
Down time:
IPL pigmentation treatments have minimal downtime, making them easy to fit into your routine.
Immediately after, you may experience mild redness and warmth in the skin, which typically settles within a few hours. Pigmented areas will often appear darker or more defined before they begin to flake and shed over the following days — this is a normal and expected response.
Most clients return to normal activities straight away, with visible improvements as the pigment lifts and the skin tone becomes clearer and more even.
IPL can help improve several common skin concerns including:
• Pigmentation and sun spots
• Freckles and sun damage
• Redness and rosacea
• Broken capillaries or visible vessels
• Uneven skin tone
• Dull or ageing skin
Most people notice improvement after 2-4 sessions, though a full series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart gives the best results.
No. Laser uses one specific wavelength of light, while IPL uses multiple wavelengths. This allows IPL to treat a variety of skin concerns in a single treatment.
IPL is best suited to superficial pigmentation such as sun damage, freckles and age spots. It works on pigment within the upper layers of the skin, helping to visibly reduce uneven tone and discolouration.
The light energy targets melanin in the skin and converts it into heat, which breaks the pigment into smaller fragments. These fragments are then naturally brought to the surface and shed, or cleared by the body over time.
This is a normal part of the process. The pigment has been drawn to the surface and will temporarily darken before flaking away over the following days.
IPL removes existing pigment, but it doesn’t stop new pigmentation from forming. Sun exposure is the biggest trigger, so consistent SPF use is essential to maintain your results.
To further support your skin, we often recommend incorporating a tyrosinase inhibitor into your routine. These ingredients help regulate melanin production, reducing the likelihood of new pigmentation forming and helping to maintain a clearer, more even skin tone long-term.
Not all pigmentation responds the same way. IPL is most effective for sun-related pigmentation and less suitable for deeper or hormonally driven pigmentation like melasma. We assess your skin to determine if IPL is the right option for you.
Melasma requires a more controlled, barrier-focused approach rather than heat-based treatments like IPL, which can sometimes worsen it.
We typically focus on a combination of gentle, corrective treatments and targeted skincare — including tyrosinase inhibitors to regulate pigment production, along with treatments like enzyme therapy, mild chemical peels and LED to support skin function without triggering inflammation.
Consistency is key with melasma. The goal isn’t just to lift pigment, but to manage it long-term by keeping the skin calm, supported and protected.
SPF is non-negotiable here — it’s one of the most important steps in preventing melasma from returning or worsening.
Our IPL skin treatments are designed to target specific skin concerns and may include:
• Pigmentation correction – targeting sun spots, age spots and uneven pigment
• Vascular treatments – reducing redness, rosacea and broken capillaries
• Acne treatments – helping to calm inflammation, reduce acne-causing bacteria and support clearer skin
• Skin rejuvenation – improving overall skin tone, clarity and brightness
Your therapist will assess your skin and recommend the most suitable IPL treatment based on your current skin concerns and goals.
Yes — IPL rejuvenation pairs well with treatments like LED, enzyme therapy and customised skin plans. At Skinology, we often incorporate it into a broader Skin Journey to maximise results.
First 24–48 hours:
Keep things simple. Your skin may feel warm and slightly sensitive, so avoid heat-based activities such as hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, extended sun exposure and intense exercise.
Stick to gentle skincare only — think cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. Avoid active ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, retinol or vitamin C during this time to prevent irritation.
Skin support!
Hydration is key. Focus on nourishing, barrier-supporting products to help the skin recover and function optimally.
